"Many thanks for the course yesterday. I found it very useful to go over the various features of Photoshop, and also to know which ones I might happily ignore! I think I will be a bit more confident about trying various things now and I certainly understand the print / pixel stuff better."

Year of the Artist Residency at the
National Forest Leicestershire
New, large-scale artwork was originated in public spaces using light sensitive paper, leaves and photographic chemistry. This residency in 2000/01 was part-time but took place in each of the four seasons. There was a provision for visitors to the ‘Forest' to gain first hand experience of producing work themselves, under guidance, through organised workshops.
“After I started to teach photography I soon noticed, and started to collect, discarded black and white photographic paper left in the darkroom. These were sometimes left for days, and would turn into beautiful images through the act of light, developer and fixer. I was captivated by their range of colours - some makes of paper had purples and yellows, others browns and oranges some had greens and they all included black, greys and white. These found images were to be an inspiration to me as I started to make work using the same process. This led to my first constructed pieces using leaves in 1993, and exhibited in 1997 when I was convinced the image colour was stable and permanent.”
Teaching
I teach photography because I love photography and teaching and couldn't teach it if this wasn't the case. My interest in teaching as a career came through the experience of teaching, or trying to teach as a part-time evening class teacher and getting a kick out of seeing the results of my students learning, in terms of their steady improvement, in their subject, photography. It is still a thrill and a great motivating factor, to ‘experience' students learning. My subject doesn't require any prior knowledge or qualification; so I witness a huge growth from nothing to a confident photographer, in the student's first year with the subject.
I only teach photography; but this is now a very broad subject and I can teach it at many levels. I can teach basic to advanced black & white and colour darkroom skills; 35mm to large format camera skills, digital camera skills and ‘Photoshop' manipulation; image appreciation, historical and contemporary photographic studies; practical studio and location skills; IT skills and student personal tutorials; I have also organised week long residentials for National Diploma students. I am a fully qualified FE teacher and have had 14 years full-time experience teaching GCSE, A Level, City and Guilds evening class and National Diploma Photography. I have taught an age range from 14 to 80 both in the UK and for a year in the USA on a Fulbright Teaching Exchange.
Since September 2007 I left full-time education to pursue the life of an artist but still teach one day or residential workshops for organizations such as Devon ArtCulture and Beaford Arts; and regularly give illustrated talks about my art work.
My strategies in education, of teaching and learning, have come from my experience of both teaching and of learning. My natural style is democratic, and the vast majority of my teaching is student led and giving individual support to students within a group. I find myself guiding and directing students by asking questions, exploring options, suggesting alternatives, and encouraging them to develop criteria to make informed choices. I encourage them to be independent, exploratory, to show initiative, and take responsibility for their own education. I help students with their self-initiated work in a consultative fashion and try to provide as much support and encouragement as possible.
I used to be an Information Learning Technology (ILT) Champion. Here I encouraged and practically helped my colleagues in Northampton College with using new technology, in their teaching. My IT skills are very good, both with images and text and I am well versed with the administrative side of education today.
